Papers, 1938-1982.

Papers focus primarily upon Mr. Lyons' poetry and include correspondence, typed collections of his poems organized by decade from 1939 to 1981, and several original manuscripts, including The Big Sea, Racer and Lame, Scanning the Land, and Walking Wide. Original copies of his published works as well as reviews and clippings about them constitute an extensive part of the papers. The research series consists of information he gathered on Aaron Beede, Capt. Enoch Adams, North Dakota and Northwest history. Other topics include grant records for several publications, local and national anti-Vietnam war material including publications of Vietnam Summer, art exhibit catalogs and other publications, autobiographical material, and course material for English 300, Introduction to Humanities. Correspondents include Thomas McGrath, Robert Bly, W.H. Auden, Larry Woiwode, Antony Oldknow, John R. Milton, and William L. Guy.

Thomas McGrath was born in 1916 near Sheldon, North Dakota. He first attended Moorhead State University and in 1939 earned a B.A. at the University of North Dakota.
